For All You AT&T Customers Out There

I cannot write this post without a big, exasperated sigh.  We got iPhones through AT&T so that we could use them internationally, in the hopes that we’d eliminate one difficulty of traveling- keeping in touch.  The reality is that it is very, very expensive.  First of all, the cheapest plan we can go with (after buying out the contract on one phone and turning it off) is $90/month, not including any international usage.  With no global plan, calls are $1.39/minute, and with a global plan, still a painful 99 cents/minute.  Receiving texts are free (the one benefit!), but sending a text costs 50 cents, and a picture text costs $1.30.  This is all sort of tolerable; we’ve installed an app on our phone that allows us to make phone calls over wi-fi when we are lucky enough to have it, so we can make calls if necessary, and we’ve told our family and friends not to expect much in the way of texts.   (more…)
